Is it possible to have “typical” work experiences as a disabled adult?
For parents and caregivers of special needs adults, this is not an easy question to answer. As our children grow older and age out of school and other programs, there are limited options for transition into “typical” adult pursuits (e.g. employment).
Our adult son Victor is never satisfied with the status quo and truly believes that the answer to the question is “Yes”. Despite all the challenges he goes through, he has a strong desire to learn new skills and engage in purposeful activities.
He has communicated his desire to develop a community where disabled adults can work alongside each other to complete meaningful work. He named it “Build a Guild”. The name is taken from Medieval times where a group of tradespeople would work together and share their talents with one another to create an integrated community.
